The Staff Engineer will be responsible for observing and document specific aspects of the work, typically earthwork, foundation construction, concrete, structural steel, and other aspects. The Staff Engineer will also be performing field testing related to construction, including field density tests for earthwork, concrete tests, asphaltic concrete tests, and structural steel. The Staff Engineer will also be directing construction materials technicians in performing and documenting field testing and coordinating testing of various aspects during the work.
Laboratory. The Staff Engineer will be assisting in assigning laboratory testing of soil and rock samples and reducing data developed from those laboratory tests. Expertise will be developed in preparing laboratory testing programs for quality control and quality assurance, interpreting data, and completing boring and test pit logs, data summaries, and graphical test results. With experience, the Staff Engineer will implement their own plan for testing on specific projects.
Analyses. The Staff Engineer will become familiar with basic and specific engineering analyses related to project construction and geotechnical design. These will include considerations related to bearing capacity and settlement of shallow and deep foundation systems, subgrade preparation, settlement potential of embankments as well as shallow and deep foundation systems, pavement section design and construction for roadways and airfields, and others. The Staff Engineer will receive direction in these analyses and interpretation from the Principal Engineer, Project Engineers, and/or Senior Staff Engineers. Reporting. The Staff Engineer will assist in preparation of engineering reports related to construction observations and testing and proposals. This may include the preparation of specific report topics or preparation of complete documents. This work will be directed by senior staff.Engineering. The duties of the Staff Engineer will include some work in the engineering group. This may include design and analyses related to site grading, subgrade preparation, undercut and rock excavation estimates, foundations, floor slabs, earthwork construction, concrete and asphalt mix design, and/or monitoring of earthwork.
