SENIOR DESIGNER III


Purpose of Position:

As a top level position, the Senior Designer III essentially has the experience and design capabilities of an engineer except for the Bachelor of Science degree. This individual may oversee the entire design process or assist as a technical expert on a specialized design. This position is intended for the technical expert who is non-degreed, however is considered a leader in his/her field.

The Senior Designer III is responsible for the development of project drawings from conceptual to final construction documents. The Senior Designer III assures that the final construction documents have fully integrated the client's requirements as defined in the scope of work and the efforts of the other disciplines involved on the project.

Due to the sensitive nature of his work that is associated with industrial design, this position has been developed to place individuals with strong backgrounds in responsible charge to assure all projects conform to the governing codes, specifications and clients' requirements.

Typical Duties:

The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all encompassing. Each person is expected to help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule.

? Assess the requirements of a project into tasks, and work with a project engineer to determine scope of work, budget and staffing.
? Prepare engineering studies and schematic design for new systems and analyze operation of existing systems.
? Knowledge of applicable building codes. Work with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to building codes is required.
? Assign and review work of project design team. Check progress of work and alert project engineer to change of scope or additional services.
? Coordinate all aspects of project document completion within company and externally with clients and other design professionals. Proficient written and oral communication skills.
? Prepare or review construction budgets based on experience and scope of project.
? Promote use of and participate in development of company design and production standards.
? Assist in the education and development of design staff as resource for design questions.
? Attend project meetings to coordinate efforts with the other discipline leads.
? Interface with client project engineer to access data required for completion of project as required.
? Report to Alliance project engineer on status of project with respect to schedule, manhours expended, scope changes, and issues.
? Travel to the project site and perform field survey/as-built verifications for input into final designs.
? As senior designer, he/she is responsible for overall technical accuracy of the projects under their directions. This requires conformance/verification of the following:
 Project scope of work

 Field as-built/survey effort
 Client specifications
 Governing codes
 Checking with other disciplines to assure interferences are eliminated
 Alliance CAD standards
 Presentation of drawings
? Work closely with lead engineer and help with engineering calculations for the final design of project components.
? Check both drawings and calculations for accuracy and adherence to project scope.
? May perform project related duties such as developing weekly project updates, needs lists, etc.
? Understand and implement the applicable sections of the Alliance ISO 9000 Quality System Manual.
? Keep personal data updated to reflect current experience, training and professional areas of expertise.

Limits of Authority:

? Resolves day-to-day problems of mostly technical nature. When serving as a design leader, responsibility includes meeting schedule, budget and quality requirements. Responsible for review of construction documents prior to final review by Engineer of Record. May not change scope of work without approval of project managers.
? May not change the scope of work or deviate from the contractual agreement between the firm and the client without approval of department manager and/or project engineer.
? May not approve overtime for those working under his/her direction without approval of project engineer and/or electrical department manager.
? May not reprimand or formally evaluate those under his/her direction; however, can make recommendations to the department manager with individuals who are not performing to expectations.

Relationship to Others:

? Reports directly to the department manager. The relationship between the senior designer and the other discipline lead designers/project engineer is vital. He/she must exhibit maturity, professionalism and a willingness to work with others so that complete design package can be generated. Needs to be able to direct those working his/her project so that they can also feel that they are an integral part of the project.
? Works alongside various project engineers, according to assignment. Will often serve as contact with client, other design professionals, and contractors. When in role of project leader, will coordinate and schedule work of project team. May help in performance appraisal of project team members.

Knowledge and Experience Required:

? Has a minimum of 12 years of practical experience is design for the industrial sector.
? Has excellent working knowledge of the AutoCAD and/or Intergraph software systems.
? May have a two-year associates degree.
